A Blog Is Born
Hey pal — Hey Pal Designs was born of a sneaking suspicion that it shouldn’t be that hard to find smart, skilled, kind people to help you with a renovation or remodel project. Long before there was a website, a shop, or a service menu, that was all we had: a hunch, and the scars to back it up.
We know that suspicion firsthand. There was the short-term rental conversion that turned into an all-out disaster — contractor shenanigans, a permitting nightmare that dragged on for months. There were the thousands of dollars sunk into Amazon — a genuinely great marketplace, if you know how to use it — that we spent underinformed, without a real project strategy, and without knowing how to shop for the best price relative to value. The results underperformed in every way that mattered. By the time we’d wrapped multiple STR remodels and four gut renovations, we’d learned enough to say never again.
Somewhere in there, we noticed something else: how easy it is to be a little in awe of “the professionals” — awe that makes you less likely to speak up when something feels off, more likely to just go along because surely they must know better. They don’t always. Case in point: the day we paid $1,000 for a one-hour design consultation and spent a good chunk of it listening to the designer describe his Mercedes — the one with the bulletproof glass. That was the moment it clicked: a referral is more luck than strategy.
So we decided to even the playing field. Get informed. Get opinionated. Build the thing we wished someone had handed us from the start.
That’s Hey Pal Designs — consulting support, purchasing power, and plain common sense, aimed at stitching together the tangle of experts every real project needs: construction, interior design, lighting, architecture, permitting, MEP, appliances, stone, and everyone in between. So you can just enjoy your new kitchen. Get the STR listed. Flip the house. Move on with your life.
Here’s the part that might sound backwards for a business: we hope you only ever hire us once. Our job is to hand you everything you need — the knowledge, the vendor relationships, an eye for what’s actually worth paying for — so that next time, you’ve got it yourself. You’re always welcome to call us back to help hunt down a great deal on your next project. But that call should be a “want to,” not a “HELP!”
There’s no wizard behind the curtain here. It’s not magic — it’s just having someone in your corner who’s done this enough times to know where the pitfalls are, permitting included.
A command sergeant major we served under used to say none of us is as good as all of us. That’s stuck with us ever since, and it’s basically the whole philosophy behind this place: you don’t have to go it alone. You also don’t have to hand your project — or your money — over to whoever your cousin’s neighbor recommended, sketchy work ethic included.
Welcome to the Journal. This is where it started.
